It's Friday!

Congratulations to Spencer who was the Star Student of the Week. He demonstrated the highest level of commitment to his studies this week. Spencer faced an overwhelming obstacle and still managed to get all his work done with a smile. Very deserving!

The students started the studying decimals and worked on the UOI assignments. As usual they had French and gym class today. They also started practicing presenting their speeches to an audience.

Math
The grade 5’s and 6’s competed in the Caribou Math Contest or worked on problem solving skills.

UOI – work period

The students had a very productive day. They completed the novel study, began their alternative ending, brainstormed topics for the summative assessment, worked on speeches and their novel study character connections activity.

The alternative ending should be no longer than a page long. The good copy will be written on aged paper and will be the centrepiece of a mixed media art project. The students will complete the project over the next couple of weeks during art lessons.

The second assignment is the Novel Study Connections Assignment. The students need to identify three characters in the novel Bridge to Terabithia that are exposed to a health risk discussed during Unit of Inquiry lessons. They have to communicate how each character ;
  1. What part of their health was at risk (mental, social, physical, relational).
  2. Describe the risk and relate it to the Real World Safety Pledge.
  3. How this risk affected the character.
  4. What the character could have done to lower the risks.

Art

UOI - Language

The grade 5 and 6 students read chapter 12 and some of 13.

The students were given their final assignment, to write an alternative ending to be used in a mixed media art project.

They also learned about online privacy and protecting personal information.


Lastly, they had a period to work on their Digital Citizenship and Novel study connections assignment.

Geometry Town Map Assignment

Math
The grade 5’s and 6’s began their Geometry Unit Task today. The students need to create a map for a town or city using concepts learned in class. Please see the assignment brief for details. The final product is due on Wednesday January 17 at the end of day. The students will have the next 2 class periods to complete the assessment.

UOI - Language

The grade 5 and 6 students read chapter 10 and worked on their language skills package unit 17. Which is also due on Friday.

DRA assessments began today and will continue throughout the week.

Different types of health

The grade 5’s and 6’s had a work period to prepare for the upcoming Caribou contest and the remaining students worked on their problem-solving skills.
