Special Event
Reading buddies with the SK class.
There is a long standing tradition of mentorship at the Maples between the grade levels. The grade 5 and 6 students have paired up with Mrs. O’s SK students to read and create arts and crafts occasionally. The aim of this program is to foster friendship and establish an ethos of respect throughout the school. They are so cute! See photos below.

UOI – WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE AND TIME

The students worked collaboratively to complete a jigsaw activity. They broke into small groups to learn about a specific aspect of the life of an early aboriginal. The groups learned about, food, tools, shelter, buffalo and hunting. After working in small groups, they shared what they learned with the class. Well done.

Today the grade five’s and six’s had a joint lesson. Multiplication of Whole Numbers.
The students learned three strategies to multiply 2- by 2- and 2- by 3- digit numbers.
Remember to rewrite your factors as multiplication facts.

Today the grade six’s worked independently to add and subtract whole numbers.

The grade five’s learned strategies to solve problems with multiples of 10. They worked diligently, excellent work today.

The students had a short work period to work on their creation story narratives. The students had a brief language skills lesson on plural words ending in -y.


UOI – Drama
The students began their inquiry into tableaux.

The students continued their study of the First People’s. Today the lesson was focused on the Beringia Land Bridge Theory. The students generated excellent inquiry questions and completed some mapping work with their activity.

Today the grade six’s corrected their Order of Operations practice problems.
The grade five’s worked Multiplication and Division to 144 extra practice sheets. Students worked independently on multiplication by 10’s.

Graffiti exercise to visually demonstrate math and division fact. They worked on activities from lesson 7 Multiplication and Division facts to 144.

The students continued their novel study Tuck Everlasting, in class they completed chapter 6.
Spelling unit 2 activities were assigned today. The students wrote their Unit 2 pre-test as well. 

UOI – WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE AND TIME
The students worked on their outlines for their own creation story. Last week the students analyzed several Aboriginal stories and were able to identify patterns in the writing, symbols and key characteristics of the creator.

Today the grade six’s learned how to use order of operations to solve expressions.
Definition: an expression is a mathematical statement with number and operations

The grade five’s learned two  strategies to solve subtraction problems involving 4 digit numbers.

They made the numbers friendly through compensation and they used expanded form.
